Psychiatric Center Melle

De Vylder Vinck Tailleu

Psychiatric Center Melle by De Vylder Vinck Tailleu is an experimental revitalisation project of a desolate clinic pavilion of the early 20th century in Melle, Belgium. While the structure was previously only used for clinical purposes, the transformation of 2017 provided a flexible indoor-outdoor space, increasing the usable surface area from previous surface area to new surface area.
This project contributes to the socio-ecological transformation by showing alternative ways of reading structural ruins by using the state of it as an architectural expression itself. The project aims on guiding a decay process, rather making it undone by restauration. It allows a further ruination by not protecting the building from weather conditions while at the same time prohibiting a structural collapse by installing a supporting steel skeleton.
