It all started from a small-scale temporary project, which turned into a deep involvement and a complete rethinking of the space, in turn giving a new meaning to the neighborhood around the center. Annvil’s concept for the use of the public outdoor space around Zuzeum was based on rigorous research concerning the current status of the neighborhood and its perceived attractions, as well as studies on the public accessibility of contemporary art. Landscaping experts, as well as graphic designers and art and museum specialists were involved in the project along with the core team. Outdoor space at Zuzeum was thus made into a meeting area for people of different walks of life, as socially diverse as the neighborhood itself. The central courtyard is an art object, a stage, a café and a bar at the same time. Richly ornamented with the color orange, it is created to facilitate connection, communication, discovery and mutual inspiration. Conceived as a democratic idea, it helps make art more accessible to different audiences. At the same time, it is a long-term investment into a largely neglected part of the city, providing it with much needed, quality public space.
