The Gertrudes 121 project by 12 Līnijas is an attentive renovation of tenement houses of 1903 in Riga, Latvia. While the buildings were previously only four storeys, the refurbishment of 2017 provided two additional floors, increasing the usable surface area to 5166 m².
This project contributes to the social-environmental transformation by adding additional housing units to an existing dwelling. The developer's aim of providing as many compact rental apartments as possible, equipped to today's standards, was achieved while minimising the environmental impact. By reusing the original structure, the CO2 emissions associated with demolition were avoided, while simultaneously preserving the historic value of the building. The Gertrudes 121 project came in responds to the growing desire of tenants to live in the historic centre of Riga.
