The Le Murate project by RPBW, Roberto + Mario Melosi Pittalis is a monumental renovation of a 15th century monastery used as a prison from 1883 to 1985 in Florence, Italy. While the complex has been vacant for several years, the conversion from 1999 onwards provided space for residential, commercial and public use, reactivating the usable surface area of 23500m².

This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by revitalizing a historic site, taking in account the already existing substance. Not only does the original structure provide the majority of the building material, but it also comes with a common historic value. Through its mixed-use development, including residential, public, and commercial spaces, it fosters community interaction and enhances the urban fabric while respecting the site's cultural heritage.
