Frikvarteret Housing

Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects

The "Frikvarteret Housing" project by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen is an exemplary transformation of an industrial harbour in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the building previously serviced the area’s maritime industry, the transformation in 2015 repurposed it into housing, significantly expanding its usable surface area to 900 m² divided into six terraced houses. The project showcases a compelling social-ecological transformation. By renovating a former industrial site into sustainable housing, it reduces urban sprawl, promotes community integration, and exemplifies adaptive reuse, minimizing environmental impact while revitalizing the urban fabric. It serves as a model for sustainable development in urban areas.
