Place d’Italie by Data Architectes is an adaptive renovation project of an industrial metro line command and office building of the 1950s in Paris, France. While the structure was previously only used for train maintenance and offices, the conversion of 2021 provided 52 social housing units, increasing the usable surface area from to 5 100 m2.
This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by offering affordable housing in the city of Paris, and using a vegetated roof on top of the industrial workshop. The vegetation increases the capacity of the roof for retaining and reducing rainwater, enhancing thermal and acoustic performance of the building, and providing a cooling oasis in summer through evapotranspiration.
