The Ai Crociferi project by Ruggero Menegatti Architect is a profound renovation of a historic monastery dating back to the 12th century in Venice, Italy. While the building was vacant for over 50 years, the transformation of 2014, has turned it into a university residence for students, researchers and professors, reactivating the usable surface area of 41,000 m².

This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by converting a centuries-old building complex into a lively new space. Through the reuse of the existing structure, the majority of the building materials has been saved from demolition, thus reducing the environmental impact overall. Moreover do the old massive stone walls bring a welcome cooling effect in summer. This project convinces with its multilayered program restoring a neglected monument not only for students, staff and professors but also for the general public, promoting academic collaboration and community engagement.
