Savonnerie Heymans

MDW Architecture

Savonnerie Heymans by MDW Architecture is a big-scale renovation and conversion project of a formal industrial site of the 19 hundrets in Brussels, Belgium. While the structure was previously only used for soap production, the transformation of 2010 provided 42 new social housing units, as well as a day nursery, increasing the usable surface area from previous surface area to 6.500m².
This project contributes to the socio-ecological transformation by providing an example for a high-quality dense building structure. Together with the residents, concepts for various outdoor spaces have been developed leading to a collective vegetable garden, a pond, beehives, as well as a henhouse. These various spaces offer a home not only the residents but also insects and all kinds of animals, creating a real "Vivre-Ensemble".
