The block of 3 rue des Ajoncs by Lacaton & Vassal is a long term extention project of a depreciated building from the 1970s in Saint-Nazaire, France. While the building was previously only used for housing, the transformation of 2016 provided winter gardens and balconies, increasing the usable surface area in a typical T4 from 79,08 m2 to 112,78 m2. This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by highlighting the previously forgotten qualities of the building, such as green spaces, beautiful views and conviviality. The usable surface is re-distributed in order to achieve a wider circulation in every room, answering to the accessibility norms. The construction of the building had remained solid due to good preservation, demonstrating the virtues of durable materials.
