Foppens 16 by noArchitecten is a strategic renovation project of an old paper factory of original construction date in Brussels, Belgium. While the industrial building was previously only used for manufacturing purposes, the transformation of 2008 provided new uses in form of apartments, an artist’s studio, as well as an architectural office, increasing the usable surface area from previous surface area to new surface area.
This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by repurposing old industrial structures, rather than replacing them with new buildings. This allows the original structure as well as the historical value it carries to be preserved. At the same time, the building is not left standing alone as a landmark but is rather reused and revived.
