El Roser Social Center by Josep Ferrando Architecture in collaboration with Gallego Arquitectura is an innocvative renovation project of a historical remand prison of 1929 in Reus, Spain. While the building was previously only used for prison and school, the conversion of 2021 provided a new social center.
This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by reactivating a disused historical site into a community center, providing social services such as a shelter for the homeless, a soup kitchen and a community space. The project respects and recovers the original building, revealing the structure and construction typology of the time, hidden until now, and evoking an image of austerity.
