The Silo project by COBE is a remarkable renovation of an iconic grain silo in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the structure was previously only used for storing and handling grain, its transformation in 2017 into a residential complex with public facilities significantly increased its usable surface area to 10,000 m². By retaining the silo, 2’740 m³ of concrete were saved from demolition; the equivalent of over 500 tons of embodied CO₂e. Leftover concrete from windows, decks, and doors has been reused for landscape features. The Silo project's creation of 39 apartments in a previously vacant urban structure contributes to densification, mitigating urban sprawl. Nordhavn's industrial heritage, integral to the harbor's identity, is preserved through the adaptation of existing concrete structures, maintaining the area's historical significance.
