Handelszentrum 16

smartvoll

Handelszentrum 16 by smartvoll is a mixed use building of 2021 in Bergheim, Austria. While being a former mail order business, the transformation of 2021 provided space for several small businesses, a café, a ballet school, ski production, start ups, retail, workshops, a shrimp farm and many more.  This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by reanimating a vacant warehouse to a vibrant  mix of various uses.  If the abandoned warehouses had been demolished and the 25,500m³ of concrete already used had been transported to the nearest recycling plant, the trucks would have covered a total distance of about 80,000km – equivalent to going twice around the world. These journeys alone would have consumed over 15 tons of CO2. Not to mention what it would have meant for the environment to realize a project of this size as a new building and on an unbuilt area.
